North Carolina

The NC Department of Insurance requires 24 CE credit hours in a 24 month period with 3 hours being Ethics every compliance period and for those holding a Property, Personal Lines or Adjusters license, 3 hours being Flood in the initial and every other compliance period.

The licensee’s 24 month compliance period is based on their birth month and even or odd birth year, and has until the end of their birth month to meet their CE requirement. Their new compliance period begins the first day of the following month.

There is no minimum CE requirement per license.

Licensees may take ANY approved North Carolina insurance CE course, regardless of their license type or the subject matter, and receive credit hours.

Carryover Hours: There is no maximum number of carryover hours. Excess hours carryover to the next compliance period as General CE hours.

Repeated Course Numbers: A licensee will only receive credit hours once if the same course number is taken within the same compliance period. Course numbers may, however, be repeated from compliance period to compliance period.

If a Flood course is taken in a non-required compliance period, the licensee WILL receive credit hours as long as it is not the same course number in the same compliance period. The mandatory courses must be taken in the required compliance periods in order to meet the Flood and Ethics CE requirement.

New Licensees

New licensees are required to take 24 CE hours with 3 hours being Ethics and for those holding a Property, Personal Lines, or Adjusters license, 3 hours being Flood in their initial compliance period.

Three hours of Ethics is required every compliance period thereafter. If they hold an Property, Personal Lines, or Adjusters license, three (3) hours of Flood is required every other compliance period thereafter.

CE Exemptions: Only military and medical exemptions for the current compliance period will be issued. An exemption request form must be submitted to Prometric each compliance period. The “Request for Military or Medical Waiver” form can be found on the Prometric website. Licensees granted a CE exemption based on age/years on or before December 31, 2011 are grandfathered in and remain exempt from all CE requirements.

CE Extensions: Extensions may be requested through Prometric no sooner than 30 days before the end of the compliance period and no later than the last day of the compliance period with a $75 administrative fee. The extension is valid for 30 days after your compliance period ends. The Extension Request form may be found on the Prometric website.

CE Non-Compliant: If a licensee does not meet the required CE hours by their compliance end date or the mandatory course requirement(s) in their required compliance period, their licenses and company appointments will cancel.

The licensee has a 120 day make-up period to complete the deficit hours or mandatory courses. Once the deficit hours or mandatory courses are completed and posted on their transcript, the licensee must submit a Reinstatement of License request form along with a $75.00 reinstatement fee to Prometric.

Prometric will reinstate the license(s). The licensee must then contact their insurance companies to be reappointed.

If CE or the mandatory courses are not completed by the end of the 120 day period, the license becomes inactive. Prelicensing education must be completed and the state examination must be passed in order to receive a new license.

Prometric, NC CE administrator, will mail a letter 120 days and another one 45 days prior to your deadline compliance period if you are not in CE compliance. In order to do this, they must have your correct address.

Address Changes: NC statute requires licensees to provide a current email address and give notice to the Commissioner of Insurance of any residential address change within 10 business days after the licensee moves into their new residence. Email and address changes can be made on the National Insurance Producer Registry, www.nipr.com.

CE Transcripts are available on the Prometric website, www.Prometric.com/CE/ncceprod. You can view your previous and current compliance periods, CE courses, carryover and total CE hours, compliance status and compliance end date.
